 Kabi Samrat Upendra Bhanja was a famous poet, scholar, and monarch who lived in Odisha during the 17th century. He is known for his contributions to Odia literature, particularly for his poetry and plays.


Upendra Bhanja was born in the town of Dhenkanal in present-day Odisha. He belonged to the Bhanja dynasty, which ruled over a large part of Odisha during his time. He received a traditional education and was trained in Sanskrit, Hindi, and Odia.


Upendra Bhanja is known for his contributions to Odia literature, particularly for his poetry and plays. His works include "Baidehisha Bilasa," "Kala Chandrika," "Labanyabati," and "Bhanja Raja Pattanaik." His poetry is noted for its lyrical quality, evocative imagery, and emotional depth. He is considered one of the pioneers of the Kavya style of poetry in Odia literature.


Upendra Bhanja was also a patron of the arts and supported the development of music, dance, and theater in Odisha.
